Business-building ideas and advice to move you forward faster.
It’s not quite Thanksgiving yet, and many advisors’ minds are consumed with all the activities they need to accomplish between now and year-end. Beware of focusing so intently on your business sprint to the end of the year that you miss the opportunity this week to deeply engage with those who mean the most.
It’s Thanksgiving week. We’re a couple of days earlier with our post, and already I’m hearing from some advisors who feel like they’re gearing up at the start line for a final six-week sprint into the year’s end.
I want to encourage you to take some time this Thanksgiving. Don’t think past Thursday. I know we’re all busy. We’ve got a load of things to do. But Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, when you’re going to have the opportunity to spend it with friends and family. Don’t think past Thursday. Don’t worry about what’s got to happen Friday or the following week. Just focus on being fully present with friends and family you’re going to have the opportunity to listen to and to share some fun time with.
I’m reading a book at the moment called The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. It’s by John Comer, and he quotes from a number of different people in this book. And Linda Stone, a Microsoft researcher, says this: “Continuous partial attention is our new normal.” “Continuous partial attention is our new normal.” And what she’s talking about is the fact that we’re losing the ability to actually focus intensely at any given time on any one thing. And unfortunately, we can be like that with people, and even those people we love most.
So this Thursday, on Thanksgiving Day, be fully present, mentally and physically, with the people you love most. Don’t worry about Friday, don’t worry about what’s going to happen next week. Just enjoy Thanksgiving Day.
Have a wonderful celebration, and I look forward to bringing you another Distraction-Proof Advisor Idea…
Actually, we’re not even going to worry about next week because we’re not looking past Thursday!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

Great post about partial attention being the new normal.
Thanks, Hans. It seems like it takes a load of focus just to zero in
on a single activity. However, well worth the rewards when we do.
Trust your year is going well and enjoy a rest-filled Thanksgiving, Hans.
