Business-building ideas and advice to move you forward faster.
Having a clear picture of what you want success to look like is a crucial first step to getting there.
Executing your plans is so much easier if you have this one thing.
…

So that one thing that you need is a clear picture—a clear vision of what your success is going to look like and how you’re going to feel upon achieving it. And you’re going to revisit this picture constantly to remind you, “That’s exactly what I’m shooting for. This is exactly what I can experience when I do achieve my goals, when I do reach that point of success.”
For instance, it might be to take off occasional afternoons where you can be involved with your children’s soccer practice, or it might be to have extended weekends away where you can take your family away. It might be to have a Friday off now and again to specifically plan half the day for your next month’s business activities, but then take the rest of Friday off and spend that with your partner. Those are the kinds of objectives that you want to set down and have a clear picture of what they’re going to look like. So have a picture of you and your child, have a picture of you and your spouse on vacation and exactly what that does look like. You need that image in mind.
Last week I was asked by a couple of advisors what kind of images I have in mind. After all, I’ve competed at the Olympics, I’ve won an Olympic medal. What is it that motivates me? Well, for me it’s an image that I look at every single morning when I’m reviewing my activities that I’ve got to complete for the day. This is a 501c3 organization called Set Free Alliance. And amongst some of their activities, they provide wells, especially in India, where they help bring in fresh water to villages. Why is that important? Because it’s typically the children that have to walk miles and miles away to bring back dirty, disease-ridden water, and while they’re doing that and risking getting sick, they’re missing getting an education. What Set Free Alliance does is go in and, for $10,000, builds a well where that community can now enjoy the benefits of that: the children can get educated, and it builds and nurtures a community around that well. And they also rescue children from slavery and from horrific conditions and bring them back, many times to their parents. They open up churches in their local community and, again, it just provides some phenomenal results and influences into children’s lives. There’s a picture I have every morning when I’m writing down my priorities, I’m seeing exactly what I’m looking to do in business: $10,000 for a well. How do we go about pursuing that and achieving that? So it’s super important to have that picture.
Finally, just how important is having that picture? Well, interestingly in Genesis 13, a guy called Abram is given a promise by God, and he’s told that God is going to bring forth a nation through Abram. He is going to give birth over the many generations to an entire nation. God tells him that, and you’d think for God, God could simply say, “I’ve said it, it’s going to happen. I’m God.” But He doesn’t. In Genesis 13, he has Abram look north, south, east and west, and He tells him if you can number the dust particles, you’ll be able to number your descendants. If you can number the grains of sand here, you’ll be able to number the population that’s going to come forth from you. So you see God using an illustration, and you’d think, “Well, that would be enough.” No—in Genesis 15, two chapters later, it’s the evening, and God calls Abram out of his tent. He tells Abram to look up and look at the stars. Count the stars, and if you can number the stars, again, you’ll be able to number your offspring. So you can imagine Abram, every day during the day, seeing the dust, seeing the sand and remembering that promise. And in the evening, when he’s a little tired and he’s having his meal outside, looking up and seeing the stars and remembering God’s promise. God uses pictures to illustrate to Abram, “This is why you need to keep excited, both day and night.” And if it’s God saying that and showing the importance of having an illustration that we follow, we really need to be doing it.
So to do this most effectively:
Know your why, get a very clear picture about what success looks like, and look at it every single day.
