Business-building ideas and advice to move you forward faster.
Waiting until it’s perfect can actually be code for simple procrastination. Stop waiting! When you’ve determined you need to use new language with prospects and clients, you need to take action and just say it.
You’ve got to accept you’re probably not going say it right the first time.
…
However, when you’re saying new language to clients for the first time, or when you’re practicing new language with prospects for the first time, the only way you can get better at saying it is simply to do it in real-life situations. You can’t continue practicing and practicing. You have to engage and use the language that you want to eventually have roll flawlessly when you’re talking with prospects and clients.
I’ve been doing a series of webinars with a firm’s advisors, and it’s been neat to see the advisors grapple with language for the first time—admittedly out of their comfort zone—but continue practicing it then deliver it in real-life situations and then hear their reports coming back. What they’ve said is, Yes, the first couple of times they did trip up over their own words, and it made them a little nervous. But they persevered with real-life conversations. “Perfectionism is the mother of procrastination.” Michael Hyatt said that great quote. What it means is that if you’re looking to be perfect at something, that can be an easy way just to put off actually engaging and using it in real-life situations. When it comes to language and verbiage that we want to ingrain in our vocabulary, the only way to do it and to master it is to actually use it when you are speaking to people.
Yes, I can promise you that you probably will mess up the first several times you try, but I can also promise you you’ll never deliver it flawlessly unless you engage and use it when you’re actually talking with people.
So to get comfortable with new language,
Practice it, get comfortable with it, and let it roll flawlessly.
