Your Most Important Year-End Review

AdvisorBlast – Quick Tips to Accelerate Your Practice
In this issue: Set yourself up for great success in 2015 with your own year-end review.

Consistently successful people share a common habit: at the end of each year, they make time to reflect on and evaluate what they did in the previous 12 months. To give yourself a great advantage going into the New Year, allocate time to review your efforts during this year, so you can plan how to be more effective in 2015.

What went great this past year with:

  • Your relationships with family and friends?
  • Taking care of yourself physically?
  • Nurturing your spiritual well-being?
  • Developing your career and strengthening your business?

Life can get so busy that we only think about these things in passing, if at all. But reviewing the past has tremendous value for getting the most from your time and efforts in the future. This year, stop, consider, and plan for these areas of your life.

Book a day (or at least half a day) between Christmas and New Year’s Eve to get some quiet time alone to reflect on 2014 and set a path for the year ahead. Go someplace where you won’t be distracted by running into people you know; switch off your phone for a while.

  • Consider your most important 4 or 5 relationships. How have you intentionally deepened them this year? How do plan to do this next year? Decide when you will schedule appointments with these people to ensure you have quality growth time with them.
  • How did you tend to your physical health this year? What worked well, and what changes will you make? Did you exercise as much as you would have liked? Do you need to find a workout partner to meet you at the gym or hold you accountable with regular walks? Do you want to develop better self-control over your eating, bed time, or work hours?
  • What did you do to develop personally throughout the year? What books did you read specifically to learn how other people think and handle challenges?
  • What 2 or 3 key business areas do you want to focus on to have the greatest impact on your 2015 year-end results?
  • What was your biggest disappointment or your largest unfulfilled goal this year? Why? Were you being realistic? What have you learned? Do you need to let that particular item go and move on? Or, do you need to give that goal more priority to see it through?
  • What are you most thankful for? What do you need to be more thankful for? Whom do you need to express your appreciation to?
  • What are you going to say no to and let go next year?

Most of my clients like to take a break from their electronics and write things down on paper – getting away from ubiquitous screens often helps people slow down and reflect. Mentally build a picture of what you would like things to look like this time next year. Choose what you need to prioritize to make that picture a reality.

Have a blessed Christmas and a safe New Year with those you love! I look forward to continuing our dialogue in 2015.
