All work and no play makes Jack (or Jill) a dull boy (or girl) – even if your work is a game you love. Olympic commentators have made much of beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh-Jennings’ being a mother of two preschoolers this week: they’ve wanted to know if her family is a distraction from her “work” of volleyball.

Walsh-Jennings has replied with an emphatic “No!” She says her children help her take her attention off volleyball and rest her mind, making her a better person AND a better player (her “work” partner Misty May-Treanor agrees). In fact, she says, having an interest unrelated to the game makes it so that when she does play (or work), she is refreshed and able to focus better on the game.

No matter how passionate you are about your business and how much you love what you do, are you developing relationships and interests that have nothing to do with your work and finding new clients? Studies show people who take regular breaks from work and thinking about work are much more productive than people who keep plowing through or have no other interests.

Whether it’s with your family, friends, church, or a community group, get a life outside of work. It’s good for you and will ultimately make you more effective when you are at work.
