AdviserBlast – Quick Tips to Accelerate Your Practice

In this issue: The two most important & powerful things to do to achieve your goals

I hope you’re enjoying summer and the simple pleasures of the season!

In keeping with the theme of simplicity, after speaking at a conference last weekend (in Vegas at 110o – hello summer!), an adviser asked me, “If you wanted to achieve your goals but were permitted to do only two activities toward that, what they be?”

After thinking about it for a few seconds, I told him the two most important things I do toward that end every day. “I have my objectives, goals and aspirations clearly written out, and I review them daily.”

Here’s why those two simple activities are so powerful and how you can use them:

ACTIVITY #1:  Have my objectives, goals, and aspirations clearly written out.
Even though I know them verbatim, I read the list slowly. In addition to the specific activities, I’ve written the fulfilling results of achieving those objectives. (These results are often what we REALLY want and are great motivators to keep in front of us!)

For example, alongside my goal of “Publish my book for financial advisers” are the simple notes:

“By publishing, I’ll be able to:

  • Better help advisers
  • Speak more
  • Increase my income"

Reading this, even slowly, literally takes no longer than 30 seconds, but I’m immediately better focused, more energized, and way more effective at spotting and avoiding distractions, so I can reach my goals more quickly.

How you can use this now
Take out your Blackberry or whatever you carry with you as a reminder of what to do. I hope you have your goals already written out (go ahead and do that, if you don’t already have it down) and then fill in the blanks below.

"By (activity you’ll complete) ,I’ll be able to:

  •

  •

  •                                                 "

ACTIVITY #2: Review my list every day.
We often spend too much time listening to and worrying about what everyone else says and thinks and not enough time paying attention to our own clearly defined reasons for doing what we’re doing.

I keep my list on a file on my Blackberry and scroll through it at least two times each day, usually when I’m in line waiting to get on the ferry in the morning and evening. In the morning I refresh my true priorities at the top of my mind, influencing all my activities that day. At the end of the day when I’m winding down, I take another look, mentally evaluating what I’ve done to move closer to what I want.

How you can use this today
So, when will you review your list? Don’t fool yourself and assume you’ll do it without planning to do it. Set a reminder each day to physically stop and look at what you’ve chosen to spend your time and abilities pursuing. Then, imaging what it’s going to feel like once you’ve accomplished your objective, stop reviewing, and begin taking the next steps forward.

Keep it simple,
Paul
