Productive Focus

Preparing for Excellence – Issue 2

2008 Beijing OlympicsLabor Day and the more relaxed days of summer are behind us, and the time for productive focus is here. Last month we talked about how the decisions you are making and actions you are choosing now will affect your performance next summer, just as for the athletes hoping to achieve success at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now that objectives have been chosen, getting into the right mindset is key to both their and your long-term success.

Passing the “one year out” mark is a huge milestone for the athlete, demanding they take stock of what they are pursuing and realistically weigh up the physical and emotional cost of successfully reaching their goal. The athletes

  • reflect upon their Olympic desires and aspirations,
  • recognize the point where they are at now, and
  • respond, committing to further evaluate every thought, motive and action to ensure everything they think and do reflects their Olympic convictions.

In our busy, intrusive culture today, finding quiet, quality time to honestly self-evaluate what we’re doing and why can be difficult. But, just like the aspiring athlete, we need to make time to think clearly and ensure our actions are truly in-line with our dreams and desires.

TODAY, take just six minutes to get into the right mindset to achieve the success you want. (Really do this – don’t just think about doing it!) Spend 2 minutes on each of the following:

  • Reflect upon your desires and aspirations,
  • Recognize where you are currently relative to your final objective, and
  • Respond by identifying and then beginning to take specific, measurable steps which will move you closer toward achieving what you’ve been equipped to do.

Then, just like the Olympian, continue to move forward with faith, focus, and fortitude.
